Mario “Smokin” Diaz (Spring 1988)

This is the last one of the Chicago DJ’s I listened to growing up. I had a couple of Mario’s records as well lol. This mix is more on the progressive side. The true progressive tracks some of it was not my style but I respect different because it’s still good.

Mickey “Mixin” Oliver (Summer 1988)

I was so into house as a kid I even liked the progressive and free-style records some Chicago DJ’s played. I had a few of Mickey’s records lol. I think the big one in Detroit was call “Electric House” I don’t really remember but it was a new dance show classic. This mix might not be for everyone out there but I like it so here it is.

Ralph “The Razz” Rosario (Spring 1988)

Some of the hottest house records from back in the day was in Spanish. I didn’t really know what they were saying but it was good stuff. This guy produced one of the hottest records in Detroit as far as house from Chicago goes. “You Use To Hold Me” This mix has a lot of popular traxx both Chicago and Detroit DJ’s were really into.

Jilian “Jumpin” Perez (Winter 1988)

More hot house from another one of my favorite old school Chicago DJ’s. I think I own pretty much every record his plays in this mix!!!

Farley “JackMaster” Funk 2-14-88

This one might get a bit over the top If you were not into the deep house the disco tunes from back in the day. It’s time to learn or burn with this hot, hot, hot Farley mix. It’s just another from the extended collection.

Bad Boy Bill (Spring 1988 WBMX)

As I said in interview from the beginning of my career I love all the WBMX,WGCI, and Chicago HOT MIX 5 DJ’s. What is a DJ If he can’t scratch? Well It’s some scratching, cutting, and all kinds of trickery in this mix. Anyway I happened to pull this 22 year old Bad Bill Boy cassette out of my collection. Enjoy!!!

The MayDay Mix 5-27-88

I don’t think every record on this mix got releases. After not hearing this tape for 20 plus years I realized it’s some Detroit Techno that even I wasn’t up on. If dance music still sounded this good the world would be a better place.

The Wizard (Jeff Mills) 7-27-87

What can I say? Another classic mix that helped define Detroit as the dance music legend it is. I’m tell you I have several hundred of these Wizard tapes lol!!!

I was much to young to drive or hang out at a club during the time this was recorded. So I spent all of my time at home taping various Detroit radio mix shows. As a little kid I was amazed to hear the turntable skills of “The Wizard”. I didn’t even know the names of most of the dance records on this recording. But I spent all my money buying the ones I did know the name of when my father would take me to the record shop. My mother would always get mad saying “you spend to much money on records”. But I was a hustler even back then I sold the Detroit News & Free Press news papers not dope! So this is one Wizard tape out of my personal collection of many.

This is a very rare recording of when “The Electrifying Mojo” had a DJ contest called “The Mixerdome”. I especially recorded this because the members of Mad Sounds I know personal as a kid. If they didn’t allow me to be around them I may not have been inspired to be a DJ today. Leon Purse, Disco Greg, and the late “Jesse The Body” of the “New Dance Show” all helped me in some way when I was growing up. I just hope DJ Zapp will not be mad for me sharing this recording it was good for it’s time. I know your 1 thousand times better now on the tables and still continue to spin on Detroit radio to this day. I don’t remember who won or lost???

This is more of the mixes from a very rare recording of when “The Electrifying Mojo” had a DJ contest called “The Mixerdome”. I didn’t know any city in the world back then where you would find DJ’s mixing rap records with techno and house or slow jams with rap or funk. Classic stuff right now.

Derrick May (Mayday Mix) New Years Eve 1988
Sometime in 1988

I happened to press record back in 1988 on New Years Eve to catch this “MayDay Mix” by Derrick May as 98 WJLB (Detroit Radio) counted down to the new year 1989. I really loved recording these MayDay mixes because there were always traxx that were not in stores or If I happened to have the record I would hear a different version of the song than the one on the record. But the craziest thing about the MayDay mixes is the reel to reel that you can hear sometimes spinning backward through the mix. This is classic Detroit I bet no one has this recording ha-ha!!! I’m sure I have a lot more of them I can dig up as well. This is a good history lesson for those pretending to know about the roots of Detroit Dance Music!

Farley “JackMaster” Funk (Live) WBMX Chicago
Sometime in 1988

As much as I like Detroit radio growing up I loved Chicago radio maybe a little bit more. I had relatives in Chicago that I would stay with sometimes so that’s how I got this HOT Farley mix. I think Farley “JackMaster” Funk is to Chicago what “The Wizard” (Jeff Mills) is to Detroit. What I’m saying is, I think those 2 guys were the biggest radio mix DJ’s in the mid to late 80’s in these 2 cities. Who plays Dr. Martin Luther King speeches over house music? This whole mix is unbelievably hot and very long. Farley was taking requests live on the radio while mixing as a kid this blew me away. He knew where the breaks were on records so well like he made all of them.

Mike “HitMan” Wilson (Mini Hot Lunch Mix)

Sometime in 1988

This guy was definitely in my top 5 DJ’s growing up in the 80’s. Mike HitMan Wilson was a Chicago DJ I loved as a kid. This man is doing transformer scratches to house music and the mix is like 22 years ago. It’s hotter than fish grease!! I feel all of the early Chicago mix DJ’s and House records were one half of dance music history with Detroit Techno making up the other half that created the full dance music scene. A lot of people who claim to be apart of the Detroit dance community never even heard of 90% of these records on this or any of the old school sets I’ve posted. Dance music will never be the same unless we get the purity and love of the 80’s back in the music and get the clowns out!!! Oh one last thing, The last song in this set “Fantasy Girl” is my favorite house records of all times but I never owned it. I couldn’t find that record for nothing!

Craig “The Assassinator” Adams (Teenage Years)
December 7th 1989

First off, I think a bit of history is important to understand this tape. I started collecting records at age 7. De Sean is my middle name which most family members referred to me as “Dee Dee” or just “D” as a kid. So my first DJ name was Dirty Dee until I became a teenager. As a teen I heard all the Chicago DJ’s (Hot Mix 5) use their real names or some part of their real name as a DJ name. So I came up with Craig “The Assassinator” Adams trying to be like all the Chicago House DJ’s. After high school sometime during college I changed my name one last time to who the world now knows as DJ Assault. Now that you know the history the name on this tape should make sense now. A mix tape of me as a teenager playing some of my favorite house records! I usually said the date before each mix and sometimes I even ran out of blank tapes because I recorded everything all the time. This is a tape I took… Ok stole from my mother. I laughed for 15 minutes straight when I found this tape because I taped over one of her church sermons. Guess I was out of blanks again damn LOL!!! I have 700-800 tapes all from the 80’s and early 90’s of Detroit and Chicago radio or just me mixing.
